How I Pack for a Beach Trip Without Losing My Mind(Or Forgetting Sunscreen!)

There’s something magical about a beach trip. The sound of the waves, salty air, and the promise of sandy toes and sun-kissed skin—what’s not to love?

But if you’ve ever arrived at the shore only to realize you forgot towels or someone’s swimsuit, you know the beach can go from blissful to stressful real quick.
Over the years (and quite a few sunburns later), I’ve finally mastered the art of packing for a beach day. Whether it’s a solo trip for some much-needed “me time” or a full family adventure with kids in tow, this is how I make sure we’re prepped, packed, and ready to roll.
Start With a Beach Trip Master List (Trust Me on This)
I used to think I could wing it. “It’s just the beach,” I told myself. Wrong.
Now I keep a beach trip checklist saved on my phone and in a drawer by the door. It's my lifesaver.
Here’s what’s always on it:
Swimsuits (yes, double-check this!)
Towels (at least one per person, plus an extra for good measure)
Sunscreen (SPF 30+ and waterproof)
Hats and sunglasses
Water bottles
Snacks (because someone will always be hungry)
Sand toys (if I’m bringing the kids)
Wet bag or plastic bag for soggy clothes
Pack the Night Before
This has been a game-changer. I now lay out everything the night before. No last-minute scrambling while trying to find the second flip-flop or a missing beach toy. I keep a designated beach tote ready with essentials like sunscreen, wipes, bug spray, and extra hair ties.
Tip: Pack some items to keep busy if a passing thunderstorm hits.
Load the Car Strategically
I try to keep the beach bag, cooler, and chairs easy to grab. Snacks go on top, because let’s face it—those are the first things everyone asks for. I also stash a small first-aid kit and extra towels in the trunk just in case. Wet wipes and hand sanitizer go in the cupholder.
Tip: It’s the little things that save your sanity.
Don’t Forget the Fun Stuff
While the basics are essential, I never forget to pack a little fun: a waterproof speaker, a good book, a frisbee, or even a beach scavenger hunt for the kids. These are the things that make the beach more than just a few hours in the sun—they turn it into a memory.
Final Tip: Expect Sand. Everywhere.
No matter how careful you are, sand will find its way into your car, your clothes, your snacks. Keep baby powder in the trunk and use on sandy feet to make cleanup easier before heading home. Also know that despite your best efforts, sand will still get everywhere...think of it as beach confetti.
Tip: Keep garbage bags available so you can easily toss in sandy items.
Getting packed for the beach doesn’t have to feel like prepping for a 3-day expedition. A little planning, a solid checklist, and a sprinkle (or bucket-full) of patience go a long way. Whether you’re off for a spontaneous sunset dip or a full-on family day trip, being organized lets you focus on what matters—soaking up the sun, diving into the waves, and making the most of your time seaside.
Happy packing—and don’t forget your flip-flops!
