Why October Is My Favorite Month
Updated: Oct 2

As a professional organizer, people often ask me what my favorite season is.
Without hesitation: Fall. More specifically, October.
There is just something magical about this month.
The air gets a little cooler. The leaves start changing. Pumpkin-flavored everything makes an appearance. We pull out cozy blankets, light our favorite candles, and finally get a break from the relentless heat of summer.
October feels like a collective sigh of relief.
But from an organizer's perspective, I love October for another reason.
It's the calm before the holiday storm.
November and December tend to arrive like a freight train. Suddenly there are holiday decorations, family gatherings, gift shopping, school events, travel plans, and enough baked goods to feed a small village.
October gives us a chance to prepare. It's the perfect month to reset our homes before the busiest season of the year begins. I always encourage my clients to use October as their "pre-holiday organizing month."
Clear out the pantry before holiday baking starts.
Declutter the coat closet before guests arrive.
Make room for holiday decorations before dragging boxes down from the attic.
Create a plan for gift storage before packages start showing up at the front door.
A little preparation now can save a lot of stress later.
But here's what I love most about October: it reminds us to slow down.
As much as I love organizing, creating a calm home isn't really about the containers, labels, or perfectly folded towels. It's about creating space for what matters.
Family movie nights
Football Saturdays
Pumpkin patches
Bonfires
Neighborhood walks
The simple moments that make this season so special.
Organization simply helps us enjoy those moments a little more because we're spending less time searching, stressing, and managing clutter.
So this October, don't worry about creating a perfect home.
Open the windows.
Light the candle.
Enjoy the cooler weather.
And maybe spend a few minutes preparing your home for the busy months ahead.
Because before we know it, we'll be wondering where the year went.
And if you're anything like me, you'll already be counting down until next October.
