A Professional Organizer's Guide to Surviving Back-to-School Season

As a professional organizer, people often assume my house is perfectly prepared for back-to-school season by mid-July.

The truth? I'm usually scrambling to find a missing water bottle while wondering who outgrew all their pants over the summer.

Back-to-school season can feel overwhelming, but after years of helping busy families create systems that work, I've learned that preparation is less about perfection and more about creating a few simple routines.

My first piece of advice? Start with the launch pad.

Create one designated area near your entryway for backpacks, lunchboxes, shoes, and anything that needs to leave the house each morning. When everything has a home, mornings become significantly less stressful.

Next, take a few minutes to declutter closets and dressers. Kids grow fast, and there's no reason to waste precious morning time digging through clothes that no longer fit. Make room for what they actually wear now.

Another game changer is creating a homework station. It doesn't need to be Pinterest-worthy. A basket with pencils, paper, chargers, and basic supplies can save countless trips around the house searching for what your child needs.

Finally, establish a simple evening reset. Before bed, have everyone put away backpacks, refill water bottles, and lay out clothes for the next day. A ten-minute reset at night can save thirty minutes of chaos in the morning.

The goal isn't to have a perfectly organized home. The goal is to create systems that make life easier when schedules get busy again.

Because let's be honest—school mornings are coming whether we're ready or not.

A little preparation now can make all the difference when that first alarm clock starts ringing.
